Reading

Sunrise Edition

Based on the reader Where Roads Diverge, this course centers around life choices. Many of the stories present eighth graders with examples of people who faced diverging roads, and how their choices affected themselves and others.

The five major themes are “The Right Kind of People,” “Every Good Gift,” “The Gifts of Love,” “Hold Fast Your Dreams,” and “Integrity.” Two or three lessons a week provide work for the whole year.

Many LightUnit exercises also deal with the theme of choosing, giving students tools for thinking through alternatives and taking the right road. Other exercises help students increase comprehension, analyze what they read, and apply it to themselves and their situations.

An optional Teacher’s Guide provides brief teacher’s notes, useful appendices, and alternate LightUnit tests.

Bible

Sunrise Edition

Sunrise Bible 800 continues the study of the New Testament from where Bible 700 ended. The first four LightUnits cover the events in the Book of Acts, and the remaining LightUnits contain brief overviews of the epistles and the Revelation. Each lesson directs the student to read a given portion of Scripture. This Scripture passage is then explained in the LightUnit and followed by activities that help the student interact with what they have learned. The course also teaches students how to use Baker’s Bible Atlas. Bible memory work is included.

Bible 800 has ten LightUnits with 16 lessons in each, including two quizzes and a test. This provides for one lesson per day for one school year. The Teacher’s Guide is in development, but is not yet available.

Language Arts

Sunrise Edition

Language Arts 800 integrates grammar, spelling, and penmanship into one easy-to-use package. Grammar and punctuation skills are introduced incrementally at the beginning of each daily lesson, followed by exercises reviewing the freshest material as well as more familiar, almost-mastered skills. Each day’s lesson concludes with penmanship and spelling practice.

This full-year course includes a research paper project for the student to complete along with a standard bibliography. They are taught how to choose vivid verbs and eliminate redundancy in their writing. Also covered are transitive/intransitive verbs, basic and perfect tenses, concrete/abstract nouns, categorizing pronouns, elliptical clauses, and figures of speech.

The Teacher's Guide provides teacher's notes, spelling word lists, useful appendices, and alternate LightUnit tests.

Math

Sunrise Edition

Math LightUnit 801 tests and reviews concepts that should be mastered in seventh grade to verify readiness for the Math 800 level.

The remaining LightUnits review previously taught concepts and introduce new skills and concepts in incremental, continuously reviewed steps. We teach the metric system simultaneously with the U.S. system of measurement.

This full-year course contains enough pre-algebra to be an excellent prerequisite for any Algebra I course. Students who satisfactorily complete Math 800 will also be prepared for high school geometry and/or consumer math. Math 810 teaches practical business skills such as writing checks, budgeting income, and balancing an account.
Math 800 themes (one per LightUnit) deal with suitable occupations for Christians, and integrity and generosity in personal and family finances.

The Teacher's Guides give teaching tips, extra practice, solutions, LightUnit answers, and alternate LightUnit tests. Answer keys are optional if the Teacher's Guides are purchased.
